The annual fundraising campaign of Théâtre Aphasique was encouraged by almost 200 generous members and donors. Their financial support helps in the development and continuity of our activities.
Dr Paul David (1919-1999) was an eminent scientist and a great humanitarian. With the Grey Nuns, he founded the Montreal Institute of Cardiology in 1954. Veritable father of cardiology in Quebec, he always ensured that technological progress on the medical front took place along with careful consideration of the psychosocial aspects of heart disease. In 1985, just three months after his retirement, he became a senator; all the while continuing his involvement with the institute and numerous humanitarian projects.
In 1992, Dr. Paul David had a severe stroke that left him with aphasia and partial paralysis. Despite his illness, he continued to take interest in what was going on in the world and with the people close to him, for the rest of his life.
Born in Montreal and the eldest son of Dr. Paul David, Pierre David always worked in the world of media and entertainment. Adept in public relations and an experienced producer of events, Pierre turned to the film industry, producing and distributing more than twenty critically acclaimed Quebec films.
Currently residing in Los Angeles since 1983, Pierre continues to produce films, mainly in Canada, for distribution on the international marketplace.
During the years that Dr Paul David was living with aphasia and partial paralysis, Pierre maintained close contact with him. After the death of his father, Pierre David decided to help organisations for people afflicted with aphasia, by recruiting philanthropic donations from his contacts in the film industry.
In homage to the ideals, the humanitarianism and the love of life that their father had, Pierre David and his sister, Anne-Marie decided, in autumn 2000, to create a foundation in his memory.
During 10 years, this foundation has supported many organizations that work with people with aphasia, helping them to bring their goals to fruition. In the summer of 2010, the administrators made the decision to concentrate their efforts and make an alliance with a single organization featuring permanence and a solid network. Therefore, the foundation ceased their former endeavours, and formed a new foundation in the name of Dr. Paul David, an organization now entirely administered by Théâtre Aphasique and dedicated to its activities.
With the donations he collected and offered to the organization, Pierre David, with encouragement from his sister Anne-Marie, affirms his hope that the presence of Théâtre Aphasique working closely with organizations of people with aphasia (offering drama workshops and theatre performances) will continue on and on.
